Mazda is a Japanese based company that was founded in 1920. When the company started it was a manufacturer of machine tools. Eleven years later it brought its first automobile to market. Since then the company has had a chequered history of boom and bust. Ford Motor has saved it more than once and now as of 2006 they have sold 1.25 million cars to a worldwide market.
The Mazda car has had periods of great popularity and periods when they were fighting the market. They have had serious fights with its competitors, which they sometimes lost and sometimes won. From its inauspicious beginning it now enjoys a reputation for making a good car for the money in the niche it wishes to compete within. Mazda is sold worldwide under its own trade name. Since Ford became involved it seems to have had a better track record.
