As a marquee of General Motors, Pontiac vehicles have been marketed in the North America since 1926. Initially introduced as a mid-range line offering good performance with an affordable 6-cylinder engine, the company has continued a performance oriented trend throughout its history. While the initial logo was a Native American head, this was replaced in 1956 with today's characteristic red arrowhead logo. Pontiac is often associated with high performance, affordable, sporty vehicles, including the Firebird and TransAm; however, the GTO is the most influential vehicle to come out of this lineup. The GTO began the muscle car era in America, combining race car performance with drag car styling. Voted the car of the year in 1968, the success of the GTO was followed by the introduction of the successful sports coupe styling in other models in 1969. Today, a full lineup of sporty, high performance and stylish vehicles are advertised and marketed to young, hip buyers."
