The German vehicle manufacturer, Volkswagen, is based in Wolfsberg and is the fourth largest vehicle producer in the world after Toyota, GM and Ford. The company name means "people's car" in German and the popular tagline for VW is "for the love of the car".
Volkswagen got its start when Adolf Hitler demanded Ferdinand Porsche change the 1931 design of his car to ensure it was more accessible to the working people. Hans Ledwinka discussed ideas for a those changes with Porsche and in 1938, the Kdf-wagen, which later became known as the Beetle, came into existence. The Beetle has undergone a few changes over the years, including a hiatus; however, the Beetle is back with a stylish new look for the 21st century
Volkswagen produces many different types of vehicles, most notably the Rabbit, Beetle and Passat, all of which are small to mid-sized vehicles. However, VW has extended its market to include full size and mini vans as well as SUVs.
