The Acura RL is the top tier sedan manufactured by Honda and sold under the luxury brand. Acura rebadged the fourth generation Honda Legend as the Acura RL, which it replaced starting in January of 1996. The RL is said to stand for "Road Luxury" though others have suggested that it stands for "Replaces Legend". The first generation was made from 1996-1998 and had less than satisfactory reviews. Many simply didn't like that this generation didn't have a V8 option, instead it was powered solely by a 3.5 liter V6. The second generation of the RL was manufactured from 1999-2005 and saw a makeover as it was much more stylish than the first generation. There was the addition of new headlights and a new rear end, which made the car more appealing to most, yet there still was not the option of a V8 which held a lot of buyers back. The third generation began in 2005, yet still did not feature a V8 engine that many consumers wanted. This is a very sophisticated car that sports all wheel drive, and an engine that produces 76 more horsepower than the first generation engine produced as well as a five speed instead of a four speed automatic transmission."
