In 2003, the Ford Motor Company introduced a new trick intended to raise interest in their vehicles, naming all of their new models with names beginning with the letter 'F' and renaming their older models to follow this trend. The gimmick failed, confusing consumers rather than generating interest, and the Ford Freestar, formerly sold as the Windstar, was one of the victims of the fiasco. The Freestar, which was also sold as the Mercury Monterey, was sold from the 2004 model year through the 2007 model year, with declining sales toward the end attributed to a failure to keep up with the innovations of the competition. Although the run for this minivan was short, it started out with impressive sales and was among the first of the generation of stylishly designed minivans to hit the markets. It will be succeeded by the Flex in the 2009 model year. "
