When the United States market began to demand more and more sports utility vehicle options, Subaru made a wise move and chose to redesign the exterior of their Legacy station wagon to reflect a more rugged and capable personality. The new Subaru Outback was born, and released in 1994 for the 1995 model year.
The Outback is manufactured at the same plant as the Legacy and also with the Tribeca at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive Manufacturing Plant. The Legacy and Outback have been in competition since the addition of the sedan to the Outback line, and it has consistently outsold the Legacy in the United States. This competition will be shortened somewhat in the 2008 model year as the Outback is reduced to wagons only, and the Legacy wagon is removed from the line. The Outback has been a great seller for Subaru, and shows no sign of slowing down.
