When Volkswagen realized that sales of the Beetle were beginning to fall, it turned away from old engineering and began utilizing the new engineering taken from Audi, which they acquired in 1964. In 1973, this combination of new engineering and Volkswagen design culminated in the Volkswagen Passat, a compact, small family sedan.
This car revived the Volkswagen line, and was an important new addition to the company, providing excellent design and great sales to a company in bad need of revival. The Volkswagen Passat held the position of compact sedan until the Jetta was released in 1980. The Passat was pumped up to a midsize sedan and large family car, and is still doing well with sales today, retaining an important position in the Volkswagen line and doing its part to ensure that the line continues on for years to come.
