As the Volkswagen Beetle began to decline in sales, the Volkswagen company looked to newer designs and engineering to pull the company through, and came up with the design for the compact hatchback, the Rabbit. This little car is a big hitter, and is not only the best selling car with the Volkswagen company, but is also the third best selling car in the entire world.
Although the American public is turning away from the hatchback design and toward sedans like the Jetta, which is based off of the Rabbit/Golf platform, the Rabbit remains a popular model. The car was introduced in 1974, and from 1983 until 2003 was sold exclusively as the Golf, with the Rabbit name making a bold return in the last few years at the generation five revival, and selling alongside the generation four Golf until the fourth generation closed out in 2007.
