The mark of excellence that is applied to each Bentley automobile started early in the 20th century. Like many motor companies in Europe, the auto maker started as a civilian producer of military goods during World War I. Walter Owen Bentley was an engineer and business man who took the processes used to make engine parts for the first aircraft to create a line of high performance automobiles.
The Bentley brand name has moved from an independent car company to a property of both Rolls Royce and Volkswagen. From the early 1930s through the 1980s, Rolls Royce utilized Walter Owen Bentley's company to provide an affordable luxury line throughout Europe to supplement their higher priced sedans. In 1998, the Volkswagen Group purchased the luxury car maker from Rolls Royce and worked to promote the current line of high powered vehicles around the world. A selective and dedicated group of consumers purchase these cars around the world with 8,600 sedans sold worldwide.
