From 1914 on the name Maserati has stood for excellence in car building for both racing cars and road cars. Six Maserati brothers have been associated with the company through out its early days and they built and drove the cars. Their racing cars have a successful history in both Europe and the United States. In the United States they won the 1940 and 1941 Indianapolis 500.
Their road cars have also competed with the best high-end cars on the market. From 1968 on there have been a series of owners of Maserati. This includes Citroen, Fiat, Ferrari and Fiat again. After 1957 they quit building and racing cars for themselves, but still build them for others in the racing circuit. Their emphasis on road cars has come and gone several times, but currently they are again competing in the high-end market. As of 2002 they had started selling road cars in the United States.
