It was formerly just the coupe and convertible version of the 3 Series sedan, but the 4 Series has grown to include a stylish four-door hatchback, too. Now in its second generation since it became a separate model in the 2014 model year, the 4 Series continues to be the style-focused model. However, BMW has designed a massive grille on what's otherwise a pretty car, causing divided opinions and plenty of cringes from those not used to the new look.
A convertible with a power-operated soft top replaces the retractable hard top. The four-door coupe-like hatch called the Gran Coupe should arrive in dealerships after the two-door coupe and convertible models. Like its predecessor, the new 4 Series comes in RWD or AWD configurations and plenty of power no matter which model you choose.

The newest iteration of the BMW 4 Series is more than just its controversial oversized front grille, but no evaluation would be complete without mention of it. BMW, what were you thinking? If you can get beyond the styling, though, the 4 Series in M440i guise drives better than it looks. Ride quality is much more comfortable than and just as compliant as most M- or M-Sport BMWs we've driven as of late. We experienced more of a grand touring experience than that of a sport coupe. Especially with AWD, though, it's balanced but reluctant to rotate and it lacks any steering feel. A turn in the turbo 2.0L four-cylinder 430i RWD revealed more letdowns, namely uninspired interior design and a competent driving experience without much sizzle or comfort.
The M440i's turbo inline-six is a sweetheart of an engine, though. Acceleration is brisk and the automatic transmission delivers quick, smooth shifts. Driving the 4 Series, you're encouraged to wring every last ounce of power from the engine. So it's a luxury grand tourer happy to waft along the interstate and indulge full-throttle acceleration pulls. The 4 Series is a solid BMW, as long as you don't have to look at it.
Two engines are available in the 2021 4 Series, and both are paired exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

BMW's Active Driving Assistant suite of driver assistance features is standard on every 2021 4 Series. That package combines lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, and automatic high beams, as well as front and rear automatic emergency braking. The Driving Assistance Professional package builds on the standard active safety technologies with traffic jam assist, evasion assist, front cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assist with side collision avoidance.
BMW's latest infotainment system features standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a 5.1-inch instrument cluster display, built-in navigation, and an 8.8-inch main touchscreen. You can upgrade to a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 10.3-inch touchscreen via the Premium or Executive package (the latter includes the Premium package). Other available tech features include a head-up display, wireless charging, a wi-fi hotspot, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system.
The M440i xDrive features a 48-volt mild hybrid system for improved efficiency. The car stores energy gathered when slowing down or braking in a 48-volt battery to power the multimedia system or even provide quick bursts of extra power. As a result, the engine can motivate the vehicle more efficiently because it doesn't need to dedicate as much power to run the car's other systems. The 48-volt starter generator can also engage the engine stop/start system when it senses the car is below 9 mph and the driver is braking to a stop.
