2014 BMW 6-Series Overview
2014 BMW 6-Series Overview
The 2014 BMW 6-Series coupes and convertibles are found between the 5- and 7-Series models of the BMW lineup. These mid- to full-size cars are marketed to drivers who are looking for something that is more exclusive than the 5- and 7-Series sedans. While the 2014 BMW 6-Series performs as well as other cars in the BMW lineup, they are more about the style and image than performance and handling on the road.
New for 2014
The third generation of the BMW 6-Series was launched in 2011, and a series of updates, mostly to the technological features, is included with the new 2014 models.
- A new limited edition Frozen Brilliant White Edition is available for 100 drivers
- The navigation system in all models has a new design and updated operating system
The exterior of the 2014 BMW 6-Series coupes and convertibles remains unchanged from the previous year’s models. The long hood stretching back from the signature BMW double kidney grille, coupled with a crease that runs almost the full length of the body, gives the BMW 6-Series models a wide and athletic stance. The convertible is equipped with a black soft-top that can be raised and lowered independently of the rear glass window. A wide array of paint colors allows drivers to customize their BMW 6-Series as they see fit, while the limited edition Frozen Brilliant White model comes with Frozen Silver paint and 20-inch performance M wheels with black caps.
Interior & Cargo
There are two trim lines for the 2014 BMW 6-Series, which are determined by the engine size found under the hood. Both trim lines come with rear-wheel drive as standard, but can be fitted with all-wheel drive. Also, rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive coupes and convertibles are available with each engine.
The interior of the 2014 BMW 6-Series models continues to offer a plush and comfortable ride. While the design and materials remain the same, the technological features have been updated. In particular, the navigation system has had an overhaul so that it now has a new look, a new operating system, and is equipped with additional features like 3D maps, a speech-recognition system, and voice-activated controls.
The seating arrangement within the 2014 BMW 6-Series is really more of a 2+2 configuration. Passengers in the front seat will ride in style, particularly if the optional 20-way power seats are chosen. In the rear, adults will find space is at a premium, and will really only be able to sit in the rear seats for short rides. The cargo area in the back is quite large, even in the convertible when the top is down.
Standard safety equipment for all models of the 2014 BMW 6-Series includes anti-lock brakes with automatic brake drying, run flat tires, front seat active head restraints, stability and traction control, a tire pressure monitoring system, front-seat, side-impact airbags, and the BMW Assist emergency communications system. Optional safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control and a night infrared system with pedestrian detection.
The base 640i models of the 2014 BMW 6-Series are fitted with a 3.0-liter, turbocharged, six-cylinder engine that provides 315 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. The 2014 BMW 650i models are powered by a 4.4-liter, turbocharged V-8 engine that produces 445 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. All models have an eight-speed automatic transmission that includes an automatic stop/start feature. The stop/start feature stops and restarts the engine when it is idle, which ensures better gas mileage from the engine.
The BMW Driving Dynamics control allows the 2014 BMW 6-Series models to provide a ride experience that will please all types of drivers. Drivers can choose the setting they prefer, which results in electronic adjustments of the suspension, throttle control, and transmission. With the Comfort setting chosen, the 2014 BMW 6-Series coupes and convertibles provide a comfortable ride for cruising along long stretches of the highway. Dialing up to Normal, Sports, and Sports+ leads to a tightening of the suspension, the transmission kicking down, and the revs going up. Performance and handling quickly become that of a smaller and lighter car, making driving the 6-Series that much more of a sport.
