  • Sweetheart engines
  • X4 M is a real-deal M car
  • Sporty handling

  • Harsh ride
  • Compromised visibility and cargo space
  • Lackluster interior

Swoopier and sportier-looking than the mechanically identical BMW X3, the X4 is like a little sibling to the X6, which created the SUV coupe segment. BMW introduced the second-generation X4 for the 2019 model year and has since introduced an X4 M available with over 500 hp.

The X4 competes with other coupelike compact luxury SUVs including the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, Audi Q5 Sportback, Porsche Macan, and Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

What's New

  • $500-700 price increase on xDrive30i and M40i
  • Android Auto capability now standard
  • The standard Active Driving Assistant set of active safety features replaces the optional Driving Assistance package
  • Standalone X4 M Competition model discontinued; content now offered in a Competition package

What We Think

The X4 represents a significant improvement over its predecessor, even if the luxury SUV coupe's interior doesn't feel as luxurious as that of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. The X4's infotainment system is relatively intuitive and well equipped as standard, though.

The standard turbo-four is an adequate, willing powertrain, but the inline-sixes under the hood of the X4 M40i and X4 M provide deliciously smooth, awesome power. After a street and track review of the X4 M, we declared that its active rear differential, nicely tuned adaptive suspension, and 503-hp engine come together to deliver an SUV worthy of the M badge.

All that said, the X4 has some setbacks. Its sloping roofline not only encroaches on the cargo area, the resultant rear glass is so slanted that outward visibility is significantly compromised. The X4 is stiff, too, with some editors calling it overly harsh even in Comfort mode. Ingress and egress to the rear seat can also be tricky.

So yes, the X4 sacrifices some practicality over the X3 and rides a little too firm, but its unique style and strong available powertrains will make this a worthwhile choice for some buyers. For us, we'd save the extra cash and go for an X3.

Performance and Fuel Economy

BMW offers a host of powertrain options on the X4, all of which implement eight-speed automatic transmissions and standard AWD.

BMW's Active Driving Assistant is newly standard for 2021, meaning blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert join the standard feature list alongside forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Adaptive cruise control is available as a standalone option labeled the Driving Assistance Professional package. Ticking the box for the Executive package adds front and rear parking sensors, park assist, a 360-degree camera system, and curve adaptive headlights with automatic high-beams.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The X4 seats five, with 40.7 inches of legroom up front and 35.5 inches in the back seat. Cargo volume measures 18.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and expands to 50.5 cubes with the seats folded down, compared to 18.0 and 52.3 cubic feet in the Audi Q5 Sportback. Both rear legroom and cargo volume are inferior to those offered in the mechanically identical BMW X3.

Regardless of trim, every X4 features a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and—new for 2021—Android Auto. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is also standard, as is 12-speaker audio. Audiophiles can opt for the 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium system, which is a standalone option on lower trims and standard on the X4 M.
