Ford's F-Series vehicles have long been best-sellers and standard-setters among full-size pickup trucks. Within that range is the heavy-duty F-250 Super Duty, which offers truck drivers exemplary towing and hauling capabilities. The F-250 is available in regular, Super Cab, and crew cab configurations, as well as with 6.75- and 8.0-foot bed lengths. Three V-8s are offered, including a turbodiesel unit which boasts best-in-class horsepower and torque. With a wide range of trim levels available, the F-250 can be built for hard work or comfortable everyday use.

For even more capability and an available dually configuration, Ford builds the F-350 Super Duty.

What's New

  • A bed step is made optional on trim levels from the entry-level XL to the second-highest Platinum
  • Dually models in XL trim are available with manually adjustable towing mirrors
  • New exterior paint color choices are offered

What We Think

Once a Truck of the Year winner, the Ford F-250 remains a mightily impressive machine. Its massive towing and hauling capabilities mean it barely seems stressed when tasked with heavy loads. Much of that credit goes to the available 7.3-liter gas and 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8s, which both make prodigious power and torque. Although the six-speed automatic included on the base truck is somewhat archaic, the 10-speed transmission included on higher trims is slick and smart.

Trim levels offered for the F-250 run the gamut from stripped-out work truck to luxury cruiser. The available Sync 3 infotainment system is quite user friendly, and Ford's Co-Pilot 360 driver assist technologies help wrangle this massive beast. The Super Duty's biggest issue isn't the Tremor's overly stiff off-road ride but the fact that the heavy duty Rams deliver fresher styling and a better interior. Even so, whatever the task at hand, the Ford F-250 remains a competent, capable, well-executed heavy-duty pickup truck.

What Engine Is in a Ford F-250?

The F-250 is offered with three powertrain choices, all driving the rear wheels as standard or with available 4WD. The base engine is a 6.2-liter gasoline V-8 producing 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. It's connected to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The upgrade gasoline engine is a 7.3-liter V-8 making 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is also upgraded to a 10-speed automatic. In MotorTrend testing, an F-250 XLT with this engine and the Tremor off-road package accelerated to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds.

A Powerstroke turbodiesel 6.7-liter V-8 is also offered. It sends 475 hp and a massive 1,050 lb-ft of torque through a 10-speed automatic transmission. MotorTrend measured a 7.2-second 0-60 mph time from an F-250 Platinum with the Tremor off-road package and Powerstroke engine.

Safety

Available driver assist technology includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, front automatic emergency braking, trailer sway control, and a 360-degree view camera system.

How Much Weight Can an F-250 Carry?

F-250 models in crew cab, long bed, 4WD configuration have the lowest payload of the range, at 3,040 pounds. The F-250 that can carry the most weight is the regular cab, long bed, RWD model, which maxes out at 4,260 pounds.

How Much Can an F-250 Tow?

Crew cab models with 4WD and the 6.2-liter gas engine have the lowest towing capacity of the F-250 lineup, bumper-towing 12,500 pounds. Regular cab models with RWD and the Powerstroke diesel engine can pull 15,200 pounds.

For gooseneck or fifth-wheel towing, capacity ranges from 12,500 pounds in crew cab, 4WD, 6.2-liter gas V-8 models, to 22,800 pounds in regular cab, RWD, Powerstroke diesel V-8 models.

Technology

Basic F-250 trims include a 4.2-inch infotainment screen and gauge cluster display intended for handling basic vehicle functions. Higher-end models add an 8.0-inch gauge cluster display and 8.0-inch touchscreen that runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; built-in navigation is available. One USB port is included on all F-250 trims; additional charge ports, a 100-volt outlet, and wireless device charger are optional or included depending on trim.

What Is the Ford F-250 Tremor Package?

Choosing the F-250 Tremor package means the truck's capabilities won't end when the pavement does. The Tremor package bundles popular off-road equipment to let the F-250 cover tough terrain. Upgrades include twin-tube dampers, a unique rear stabilizer bar, locking rear differential, and 35-inch tires. The Tremor package lifts the F-250 to provide 10.8 inches of ground clearance and a 33-inch wading depth. Updated styling cues include a new front fascia, which improves the approach angle—and all together make the F-250 look seriously badass. Just be ready for a rough ride off-road. The Tremor package is offered on all F-250 trim levels except XL and Limited.
