2021 Karma GS-6 MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Design never gets old
  • Less expensive than before

Cons

  • Not the quickest electrified car

Karma Automotive is reinventing itself again. For 2021, the GS-6 lineup debuts as the brand's new volume offering. Priced in the mid-$80,000 range, the GS-6 extended range plug-in hybrid enters the same shopping class as all-electrics such as the Lucid Air and base Porsche Taycan. It's extremely similar to the old Revero GT, which is being reinvented as the brand's halo vehicle with an expected output of more than 1,100 hp. A fully electric GSe-6 model joins the lineup for the 2022 model year.

What We Think

When we drove the original Revero, we praised the extended-range plug-in hybrid for its extremely quiet cabin and its confidence-inspiring grip and control. Karma later updated the 404-hp powertrain and gave it significantly more juice, but the Revero GT still isn't the quickest electrified vehicle around.

Sharing the same design as the Revero, and its Fisker Karma progenitor, the GS-6 stands out in a crowd. However, the green car space is more competitive than ever before, and many buyers will gravitate to slightly less attractive, quick, long-range electric vehicles.

Performance, Range, and Charging

Taking aim at Tesla, the rear-wheel-drive Karma GS-6 delivers a potent 536 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque. This output comes courtesy of two electric motors that work together with a 28-kWh battery pack and a BMW-sourced 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder range extender. Karma says 0-60 mph comes in around 4.5 seconds, or 3.9 seconds for the Sport variant.

EPA-rated range tops out at a total of 330 miles, including 61 miles of EV range (or 54 miles if you insist on 22-inch wheels). However, Karma claims real-world EV range is closer to 80 miles.

How long does it take to charge? Karma says about four hours on a standard Level 2 charger. With a DC fast charger, drivers can replenish 90 percent of the battery in 34 minutes.

Safety

A host of safety and driver assist features can be had on the Karma GS-6. These include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and curve adaptive headlights. Other features include a 360-degree camera system and park distance monitor.

Technology

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are part of the GS-6's suite of interior technologies. Drivers can use the Karma app for charge scheduling and to remote control interior features such as air conditioning. The GS-6 also boasts over-the-air software update functionality, so the automaker can make improvements in the future without the need for owners to visit a dealer.

Warranty

Karma GS-6 drivers receive a 4-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty and an 8-year/80,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. There's also a 4-year/50,000-mile roadside assistance program.
