Once a legendary off-road body-on-frame SUV, the Nissan Pathfinder morphed into a car-based midsize three-row SUV in its current generation. In fact, we once called it a "Mallfinder" because it evolved from an off-road enthusiast favorite to a family hauler. After a mid-cycle refresh that brought a more powerful V-6 engine and subtle exterior design tweaks three years ago, we're ready for a completely updated model. We hope the next-gen Pathfinder gets modernized with the latest driver assistance and multimedia technologies found in Nissan's other vehicles.
Intriguingly, the added power on the Nissan Pathfinder's updated V-6 engine doesn't result in quicker straight-line performance, but the SUV is rated to tow up to 6,000 pounds. In MotorTrend testing, an AWD-equipped Pathfinder hit 60 mph in 7.4 seconds and finished the quarter mile in 15.7 seconds at 91.8 mph, similar numbers to the less powerful pre-refresh model. The Pathfinder's car-based underpinnings makes it easy to drive around town, and its V-6 feels powerful. In a 2017 First Test, we also noted that the Pathfinder's interior is surprisingly roomy and is able to fit an average-sized adult in the third row. As with other models in this segment, there isn't much space left with all the seats up.
The 2020 Nissan Pathfinder is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 with 284 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. EPA fuel economy ratings with the standard CVT is 20/27 mpg city/highway for all models except the AWD-equipped Platinum trim, which is rated at 19/26 mpg.
The 2020 Nissan Pathfinder received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA (out of five stars). In IIHS testing, the 2020 Pathfinder got the 2019 Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS after getting a Good score on all crashworthiness tests except the passenger's side front small overlap test where it got an Acceptable (Good is the highest score). On the headlights test, the standard halogen units got a Poor rating while the optional LED units got an Acceptable rating. In the front crash prevention test, the 2020 Pathfinder received a Superior rating in the vehicle-to-vehicle category (Superior is the highest rating).
Automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning are standard on all 2020 Pathfinder models. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control are standard on the SV and higher trims.
With all sets up, the 2020 Pathfinder has 16.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Folding down the second row increases capacity to 47.4 cubic feet while dropping the second- and third rows gets you 79.5 cubic feet.
An older version of the NissanConnect infotainment system comes standard on the 2020 Pathfinder, featuring an 8.0-inch touchscreen and six USB ports, including two USB-C charge-only ports. Onboard navigation and a 13-speaker Bose audio system are standard on the Platinum trim and optional on the SL grade as part of the SL Rock Creek Edition Premium package. A rear-seat entertainment system with two 8.0-inch screens, wireless headphones, a remote control, a USB port and an HDMI port, is optional on the Platinum grade.
