SUVs make up more than half of Porsche's sales in the U.S., and the Macan is the brand's best-seller. It's a smaller alternative to Porsche's original SUV and now second best-selling vehicle, the Cayenne. Although it's not a slinky sport coupe, the Macan places a big emphasis on performance, competing against the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, BMW X3, and Jaguar F-Pace, among others. For the 2021 model year, Apple CarPlay is standard equipment on the Macan.
What the 2021 Porsche Macan lacks in interior plushness it makes up for with stellar performance. No doubt, this is the Macan's primary focus. Even if you opt for the base model with the four-cylinder engine, the Macan corners, steers, and stops as brilliantly as you'd expect from a Porsche. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is slick, delivering power effortlessly.
The Macan S, packing a 348-hp V-6, exhibits a refined ride, razor-sharp reflexes, and sublime performance in the figure-eight handling test, as we noted in one review. To kick things up a notch further, opt for the 375-hp GTS, which we consider the driver's choice among premium compact SUVs on the market. You can also drive off with the 434-hp Macan Turbo, but we found it lacks much of the exhilaration we'd expect from a vehicle with this amount of power at a top-notch price point.

Standard safety equipment includes lane departure warning and front and rear parking sensors. On the options roster, you'll find plenty more features including lane keep assist, lane change assist, a 360-degree camera system, and adaptive cruise control.
The Macan offers 17.6 cubic feet of cargo space, or 52.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Compare that to the sporty Jaguar F-Pace, which has 31.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 69.1 behind the first row. In past reviews, we've complained about the Macan's lack of space for rear-seat passengers. The cabin seats a total of five people.
The Macan's interior includes a 10.9-inch touchscreen with navigation and Apple CarPlay. A 10-speaker audio system is standard, but buyers can upgrade to a surround sound system.
Porsche announced that the next-generation Macan will feature an all-electric version. It will sit on the PPE platform co-developed by Porsche and Audi for electric cars; the standard Macan will continue on a separate platform. If it takes a page from the Porsche Taycan, the Macan EV should have 800-volt fast charging capability and stellar performance. A Porsche official has been quoted as saying the vehicle will enter production by the end of 2022.
