2021 Toyota Venza MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Comfortable, luxurious interior
  • Impressive fuel economy
  • Standard active safety tech

Cons

  • Slightly less cargo space than RAV4
  • Frustrating touch-sensitive controls of higher trims
  • Excessive tire noise

Remember the blobby first-generation Toyota Venza? It was last sold as a 2015 model, after which Toyota discontinued the nameplate and offered no direct replacement. For 2021, the Venza is back. The new model is handsome, hybrid-only, and ready to take its place among Toyota's lineup of crossovers and SUVs.

Dimensionally, the 2021 Venza shares a wheelbase with the RAV4, but its length splits the difference between the RAV4 and Highlander. The new Venza is set to compete with two-row midsize SUVs, including the Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, and Subaru Outback.

What's New

  • The Venza is a newly redesigned model for 2021
  • Standard AWD hybrid drivetrain

What We Think

The second coming of the Venza impresses, earning a finalist spot in our 2021 SUV of the Year evaluations. It almost feels more like a Lexus than a higher-end Toyota with available features including a clever auto-dimming panoramic moonroof and handsome two-tone interior.

The Venza's available 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment setup is a nice touch, but the larger screen results in swapping physical knobs and buttons for tricky touch controls. Its cargo area is smaller than that of the RAV4, too.

Efficiency is the headline here, but some staffers complained about the coarse-sounding engine and excessive tire noise. Luckily, that doesn't stop the Venza from excelling at road-trip duty.

Performance and Fuel Economy

One of the big stories around the new Venza concerns what's under the hood. The only available powertrain is a hybrid setup that combines a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with two electric motors up front and one out back. Every Venza will route power through a CVT automatic, and the motor on the rear axle means all models will have AWD. Fuel economy numbers read 40/37 mpg city/highway.

Total system output for the Venza amounts to 219 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque. Our testing sees the Venza reach 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, nearly half a second quicker than the RAV4 Hybrid.

Where Is the 2021 Toyota Venza Built?

Although its predecessor was built at Toyota's plant in Kentucky, this new model is assembled at the automaker's Takaoka Plant in Japan.

Safety

The Venza earns strong safety scores in IIHS safety testing. With perfect crashworthiness and front crash prevention ratings, its only flaws are Acceptable and Marginal headlight ratings. With the better LEDs on XLE and Limited models, it's a 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick.

Like most new Toyotas, every Venza comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, the automaker's collection of driver assist active safety systems. It includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist with lane centering, automatic high-beams, and road sign assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert will also be standard on all trims.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The Venza has two rows of seating, with 40.9 inches of legroom up front and 37.8 inches in the back. Cargo capacity measures 28.7-28.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats. That number is notably shy of the RAV4 Hybrid's 37.6 cubic feet but greater than the 16.0 cubic feet behind the third row of the Highlander Hybrid.

Technology

The Venza LE and XLE come standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display but a 12.3-inch navigation-equipped system is available on XLE and standard on the Venza Limited. Both systems include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. A color head-up display and an electrochromic panoramic roof are both available, as well.
