If you're looking for a compact luxury sedan that's a bit different compared to the average German option, consider the Volvo S60. As with other Volvo vehicles, the S60's luxurious interior and tasteful exterior highlight its Scandinavian character: premium yet understated.
Think of the Volvo S60 as a shrunken down version of the larger S90: handsome, upscale, and restrained. This compact luxury sedan is for the consumer who doesn't want another 3 Series or C-Class. This is Scandinavian minimalism at its best. Almost everything you touch, turn, or push feels expensive, pleasing all of your senses. Volvo's seats are top notch when it comes to comfort, making the S60 an excellent road trip companion.
Although every S60 engine option has sufficient power, our favorite is the base 250-hp S60 T5 because it's the smoothest. The turbocharged and supercharged T6 model has more power but doesn't always deliver it in a refined manner. Variants with the T8 plug-in hybrid system, on the other hand, suffers from grabby brakes. We'd skip the R-Design trim, too, because the sport-tuned suspension doesn't make it as fun to drive as a Genesis G70 or Alfa Romeo Giulia, but it does detract from the ride quality.
Other quibbles include Volvo not making its Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving aid standard on the base model. Overall, the S60 remains a decent option in a crowded class. It's not the most entertaining, but it does offer premium appeal and a distinctive style.
The 2021 Volvo S60 is offered in a wide range of powertrain options based on a 2.0-liter I-4 paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The T5 is a turbocharged, T6 models use a turbocharged and supercharged engine, and the T8 is a plug-in hybrid iteration of the T6.

IIHS: 2020 Top Safety Pick
The Volvo S60 gets the IIHS' 2020 Top Safety Pick award as a result of solid crash-test scores. However, the model was held back because the standard headlights at the time earned a Marginal rating (Good is the highest possible score). For 2021, the S60's scores could change as Volvo has made formerly optional adaptive LED headlights standard equipment. On all other crashworthiness categories, the S60 received a Good score. The S60 received a Superior rating on the both categories of the front crash prevention test, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian (Superior is the highest rating).
All S60s get forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, front and rear automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and rear cross-traffic alert as standard. Pilot Assist, Volvo's semi-autonomous driving system, is standard on higher trims or part of the Advanced package on the Momentum trim. This combines adaptive cruise control, enhanced steering assist, and traffic jam assist.
Volvo's infotainment system features a 9.0-inch portrait-style touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a 10-speaker audio system, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. A 14-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system is optional on the Momentum grade and standard on the R-Design and Inscription. There's also a 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system that's standard on the Polestar Engineered model and optional on the R-Design and Inscription grade. Other tech features include a head-up display, 360-degree view parking camera system, and wireless charging.
Stick with the Momentum or Inscription variants—neither one has the harsh suspension setups of the R-Design and Polestar Engineered models. The unique City Weave plaid cloth upholstery is available on the Momentum trim, while soft Nappa leather upholstery comes on the Inscription. The latter trim also offers heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats, perfect for long road trips.
