Volvo's largest sedan is part of its flagship 90-series of vehicles that also includes the V90 wagon and XC90 SUV. Introduced for the 2017 model year, the S90 receives a subtle facelift for the 2021 model year.
Available with a gas four-cylinder or a plug-in hybrid setup, the S90 competes against other midsize luxury cars including the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Genesis G80.
We understand the temptation to go for an established midsize luxury sedan like the E-Class or BMW 5 Series, but automakers like Volvo provide a compelling alternative. The S90 offers standout style inside and out, not to mention a capacious cabin and a reason to look past the usual players.
Volvo can't match the six- and eight-cylinder engine options offered by the Germans but the S90 employs clever solutions. The turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine and available plug-in hybrid setup provide all the performance you need, plus strong fuel economy numbers. You'll travel in comfort, too, riding atop velvety smooth suspension and coddled by high-quality materials.
That said, there are arenas in which the Volvo falls behind the competition. Its cabin permits a level of road noise that feels inappropriate for a car in this segment and that comfort-oriented suspension means the S90 doesn't handle like one of the Germans. Handling isn't the number one priority in a midsize luxury sedan, though, and this big Volvo has enough strengths to deserve your consideration.
Every S90 features a four-cylinder engine, an eight-speed automatic, and AWD. The four-banger is a 2.0-liter turbo- and supercharged unit that, in S90 T6 variants, makes 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. In our First Test, the S90 T6 AWD accelerated to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. Fuel economy is rated at 21/31 mpg city/highway.
Your other powertrain option is a T8 plug-in hybrid setup that combines the turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder with a 10.4-kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor on the rear axle. Total system output measures 400 hp and 472 lb-ft, which drops the 0-60 time to 4.7 seconds. According to the EPA, plug-in S90s can travel 21 miles on electric power alone and achieve 60 mpg-e combined running on gas and electricity or 30 mpg combined on just gas.
The S90 is a strong performer in IIHS safety testing. It earns perfect scores in all six crashworthiness tests plus Superior and Advanced ratings for the standard front crash prevention system. It's a 2021 Top Safety Pick+.
True to its heritage, Volvo fits the S90 with a suite of standard active safety features. Adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking front and rear, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are included on all models.
Volvo one of a select few manufacturers that offer their midsize luxury sedans in a wagon body style. The S90's long-roofed fraternal twin is the Volvo V90, a stunningly stylish Swedish cargo hauler with as much as 69.0 cubic feet of capacity. Those more tempted by SUVs should opt for the V90 Cross Country that provides additional ground clearance and rugged styling.
The S90 is on the large end of its segment, which is reflected in its roomy back seat. It seats five passengers with 42.2 inches of legroom up front and 40.4 inches in the back; it boasts at least 3 inches more rear legroom than the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, or Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Cargo volume splits the difference between the Audi and the Benz at 13.5 cubic feet but is dwarfed by the BMW's colossal 18.7-cubic-foot trunk.
Every S90 features Volvo's 9.0-inch tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and integrated navigation as standard. A 10-speaker audio system is standard, though a 14-speaker Harman Kardon setup is included on higher trims, and a newly updated 19-speaker Bowers and Wilkins system is available as an option. All models also include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display.
