The V60 is Volvo's stylish compact wagon based on the S60 sedan. In V60 Cross Country form, the wagon takes on an SUV-like design with a higher ride height and rugged styling elements. With few compact luxury wagons available, we'd compare the V60 to the Audi A4 Allroad, as well as top-spec trims of the Subaru Outback.
We adore the V60's design inside and out, but that's been the case with just about every Volvo since the SUV of the Year-winning 2016 XC90. The V60 stands out with exceptional cargo capacity exceeding that of Volvo's own XC60 crossover. Like the V90, its Cross Country variant supplies usable ground clearance and rugged styling to attract SUV buyers without taking away from the V60's car-like dynamics.
As noted in our 2019 First Test, though, we'd avoid certain V60 variants. R-Design models include a sport-tuned suspension that provides minimal handling benefits while ruining ride quality. We also advise that buyers stay away from V60s with the optional 19-inch wheels. They look great but negatively affect ride comfort. The Sensus infotainment system has a slight learning curve, too, but as a package, the V60 is a compelling little wagon if you can't see yourself in the solid XC40 or XC60 SUVs.
The V60's two four-cylinder powertrain options couldn't be more different. The T5 engine is standard with FWD on the V60 and standard with AWD on the V60 Cross Country. In either application, T5 means 250 hp and 258 lb-ft from a 2.0-liter turbo-four mated to an eight-speed automatic. Regular FWD V60s return 23/34 mpg city/highway and Cross Country variants with AWD are rated at 22/31 mpg. The Cross Country hustles to 60 mph in 8.0 seconds, while the standard wagon in FWD form manages the same deed in 6.9 seconds.
For those seeking performance in their cargo-swallowing little Volvo, look toward the V60 Recharge. That model boasts a supercharged and turbocharged version of the 2.0-liter four-pot augmented by a plug-in hybrid system. AWD is standard, as is an eight-speed automatic. Total system power measures 415 hp and 494 lb-ft of torque.
The plug-in is rated for 69 mpg-e combined city/highway running on gas and electricity or 30 mpg combined on gas alone, plus it can travel 22 miles on electric power alone. Ah, but this is a performance variant as well as a plug-in hybrid, right? We estimate it'll reach 60 mph around the 4.5-second mark.
Although it hasn't been crash tested by the IIHS or the NHTSA, we can learn about the V60's safety from the performance of its nearly identical sedan sibling, the S60. That car earns a 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with near-flawless safety ratings. The S60 also earns a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA despite a four-star front passenger side score.
Volvo includes plenty of active safety equipment as standard on the V60. Front and rear automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are included on all models. Volvo's semi-autonomous adaptive cruise control with lane centering, dubbed Pilot Assist, is standard on the V60 Recharge and optional as part of the Advanced package on all other trims.
This wagon offers cargo capacity and usability similar to an SUV while retaining the driving dynamics and efficiency of a comparable sedan. The V60's cargo area measures 23.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 50.9 cubes with those seats folded down.
Every V60 features Volvo's Sensus infotainment system, a 9.0-inch vertically oriented touchscreen in the center of the dashboard. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability are both standard, as is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10-speaker audio. Top-spec V60s feature a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system, and audiophiles can spring for a 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins setup.
