The popular XC60 is one of the cars that helped bring the Swedish automaker back to prominence in the luxury sector. Now in its second generation, the XC60 remains one of the strongest entries in its segment. A unique plug-in hybrid variant promises plenty of power without sacrificing efficiency. Like the three-rowXC90, the five-seat XC60 offers a distinctly minimalist take on luxury complete with cool driftwood trim, available brown leather upholstery, and a dash that's mostly free of buttons.
Get inside the Volvo XC60 to experience Scandinavian Zen on four wheels. The beautifully crafted interior and its understated appearance exude sophistication without looking like it's trying too hard. Almost everything you touch feels expensive, and the seats are so comfortable that you can easily drive for hours and get to your destination refreshed.
On the road, the XC60 moves effortlessly regardless of the powertrain you choose. If you find yourself on a winding road, the XC60 can hustle through it smoothly and safely thanks to its stable handling. Even the base setup offers a good balance between comfort and agility. Beware of the larger alloy wheel options because they make the ride jittery on poorly maintained roads and produce excessive amounts of tire noise.
Volvo's infotainment system looks modern and clean, but it isn't the most user-friendly system. Despite its iPad-style look and layout, the touchscreen isn't that responsive and can get overwhelmed if you make too many inputs. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto don't project on the full screen either; they take up a chunk of the screen below a few menu items that stay on top.
The 2021 Volvo XC60 is available with a 2.0-liter I-4 paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Depending on the model you get, the engine will either be turbocharged, turbo- and supercharged, or turbocharged, supercharged, and electrified.

IIHS: 2021 Top Safety Pick+
The Volvo XC60 earned Good scores in all IIHS crashworthiness categories except for the headlights test, where it received an Average rating with the adaptive LED headlights and Marginal on the formerly standard fixed LED headlights (Good is the highest score). From the NHTSA, the XC60 earns the highest five-star overall safety score.
All XC60s get forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, front and rear automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and rear cross-traffic alert standard. You can add Volvo's Pilot Assist system, which bundles together adaptive cruise control, enhanced steering assist, and traffic jam assist, via the Advanced package on the Momentum grade, or choosing one of the higher grades where the feature is standard.
Volvo's infotainment system features a 9.0-inch portrait-style touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 10-speaker audio system. Built-in navigation is available, and a head-up display is part of the Advanced package. R-Design and Inscription models get a 14-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system as standard (a standalone option on the Momentum trim). If that's not enough, you can upgrade to a 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround sound unit on the R-Design and Inscription grades (standard on the Polestar Engineered).
As tempting as the more powerful T6 and T8 powertrain options are, stick with the XC60 T5. Aside from being the least expensive option, the T5 is the smoothest and most refined of the three offerings. Sure, it's not as powerful, but it's still more than enough to get the XC60 moving.
Skip the R-Design trim because the sport suspension isn't consistent with the XC60's otherwise serene driving experience. Pick the Momentum or Inscription trim; both are more in line with the XC60's chill, comfort-oriented attitude.
